What is happening in the case of the Russian-Israeli detainee, Elizabeth Tsurkov, is similar to what happened in the case of the British-Iranian Bazoft Rabati, who was arrested by Saddam's regime on charges of spying for Israel. This led to a diplomatic crisis between Britain and Iraq after Saddam rejected all offers by then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to grant Iraq significant concessions in exchange for his release. However, the regime's mentality at the time was not concerned with the benefits Iraq would gain if it acted flexibly on this matter, as much as it was concerned with demonstrating its ability to challenge Thatcher. The result was Britain's participation in American efforts to besiege and weaken Iraq. Unfortunately, this is almost happening again with Tsurkov, whom both Israel and America are demanding be released, or Iraq will be subject to American sanctions and even Israeli strikes, according to what was said to be a threat made by the US Secretary of Defense to Iraq in a recent phone call with the Iraqi Prime Minister. This makes us fear that things will turn out the way they did in the case of Bazoft, the suffering and tragedies are repeated. Here I would like to say, aware that there will be those who will resent my words, but I will say it because I cherish my Iraqi identity, my humanity, and the dignity of my country: Is holding on to it more important than the lives of many Iraqis who may be killed or suffer?
